Discovering Cleburne State Park: A Hidden Texas Gem Just South of Fort Worth
If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Cleburne State Park is a fantastic option that often flies under the radar. Located just 45 minutes south of Fort Worth, this park offers everything from scenic hiking trails and clear blue waters to family-friendly camping spots that are perfect for a weekend getaway.
We recently spent a few days exploring Cleburne State Park in our RV, and let me tell you, this place surprised us in the best way. Whether you’re a seasoned camper, a day hiker, or someone looking for a quick nature retreat, this park deserves a spot on your Texas travel list.
Why Cleburne State Park is Worth a Visit
One of the things that makes Cleburne State Park stand out is its rich history. Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park is home to a beautiful spring-fed lake and miles of trails that take you through rolling hills and lush Texas greenery. The CCC’s original stonework can still be seen in the park’s structures and along the historic Spillway Trail, adding a sense of charm and nostalgia to your visit.
The park isn’t massive compared to some of the other Texas State Parks, but that’s part of its appeal. It feels quiet, cozy, and less crowded, making it easy to find a peaceful campsite or a secluded hiking spot. We stayed in one of the RV-friendly sites and had quick access to the lake and nearby trailheads.
Hiking and Outdoor Adventures
Cleburne State Park features over 13 miles of trails ranging from beginner-friendly walks to more challenging loops for avid hikers and mountain bikers. The Coyote Run Trail is a great moderate hike with scenic overlooks, while the Spillway Trail takes you right past the historic rock dam built by the CCC.
If you’re into fishing or paddling, Cedar Lake is perfect for casting a line or launching a kayak. The water is calm and surprisingly clear, making it a refreshing spot to cool off on a hot Texas afternoon.
Camping at Cleburne State Park
The campground offers a mix of tent sites, screened shelters, and RV hookups. We found the sites to be spacious, shaded, and well-maintained. With easy access to restrooms, showers, and hiking trails, it’s a great setup for families or anyone looking for a quick nature getaway without sacrificing comfort.
Our Honest Thoughts
We’ve visited quite a few Texas State Parks, and Cleburne really surprised us. It’s not as well-known as places like Dinosaur Valley or Palo Duro, but that’s what makes it special. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with great hiking and lakeside views, made it a weekend we’ll definitely remember.
